Finally a Natural Blue Food Coloring!!!

All these years anything that was blue in color has been colored by artificial means.  Thank goodness that is all about to change -at least for companies that want to stay away from artificial ingredients and stay natural!  Spirulina extract is the healthy alternative, and even the FDA has gotten on board!!!  It’s a great feat!  Although it’s only been approved for gum, candy, and confections, it opens the door for further uses down the line.  Spirulina extract is one of the most nutrient rich food items out there, so not only will it be a natural “blue” color, but it will also be very healthy!  It is derived from blue-green (algae) cyanobacterium.  Spirulina is easy to work with and holds up well in candy.

I’ve always said to avoid artificial ingredients and that includes artificial colors, which are one of the scariest ingredients that should be avoided as they create numerous health risks, especially for children.  Food dyes are used in gum, candy, confection products, ice creams, popsicles, cereals, canned foods, and even yogurts (and more).  These dyes have been linked to a number of serious health issues including ADHD, allergies and even cancer.  These dyes are synthetic chemicals that add no nutritional value to foods, but triggers behavior problems in children and, possibly, cancer in everyone.

Even if you do not buy “blue” candy or gum, I still HIGHLY recommend adding Spirulina to your diet!  It is all natural and vegan.  It helps boost your energy & immunity, while supporting your eyes, brain, and cardiovascular health.   You will be hard pressed to find a better natural supplement – this is on the list of the top ten most densely nutrient superfoods on earth!  Do your research ~ it can be used as a supplement or a whole food, and comes in tablet, flake, or powder form.   Dried Spirulina is about 60% complete protein, containing all essential amino acids.  There are no known side effects or toxic effects from Spirulina intake, and has also been found to prevent damage caused by toxins affecting the heart, liver, kidneys, neurons, eyes, ovaries, DNA, and testicles.  BUT just like every other healthy product known to man, if you are on medications, beware, as there may be some negative drug interactions (don’t get me started on that subject!  Anything we take (medications) that LIMITS are intake of GOOD FOODS is NOT a great option)!!
